BATHROOM PROGRESS REVEAL Day 4! It’s been an emotional and taxing week, but y’all, this bathroom is looking good! Javier has been a saint dealing with my perfectionist OCD, and working with me to transfer the patterns I mapped out onto the walls.

Our goal was to use smaller scale marble look porcelain tile, mapped out so the veining lines up to create a look that resembles a full marble slab.

We got off to a dicey start and I had to remap and adjust multiple times in the process, but we’ve got a system down now and I’m so excited to see the large patterns come to life on the tub wall and floor.

I’m featuring some of the details that’s think makes having a professional do the job with it. The finishing details, flush walls, level-everything. They all make such a difference. I mean look at what he did on the drain!

It even passed the water test. 🙌🏼 Praise hands for no more pooled water.

Anyone else spending Spring Break sans kids? We’ve only ever spent one night alone in our house without the kids and we’re almost overwhelmed trying to think about how we want to spend our time.

The tile guy starts this morning prepping the bathroom, but Lowes has STILL not fulfilled my order from last Monday, so I’ll be spending this Monday morning on the phone trying to get some dang tile so we can get our bathroom back together.

I thought it might be fun to see something other than our bathroom this week, so here is our kitchen, clean for once. Hopefully it will stay that way this week since there won’t be rugrats here to clutter it with school artwork, treasures, and snack wrappers ☺️ Did you know this range hood and shelves were DIYs? I’ve got the tutorials in my highlights and on the blog! There are more updates coming to this space soon!

Sometimes DIYs go wrong. Has this ever happened to you? In our case, we created our dream bathroom, and we loved it, but there were issues.

In spite of doing exactly what we were supposed to, we didn’t take into consideration that our large format tiles require a different kind of mortar. So our beautiful bathroom was an accident waiting to happen.

We wanted to get it right so we could have peace of mind, and enjoy our gorgeous space without seeing mistakes and worrying about what we did wrong. So we busted up all of our hard work and we’re starting over.

The lessons learned through this have been priceless, and will be super valuable as we move forward in our house flipping adventures. Making mistakes, sometimes costly ones, is the risk you take with DIY, but knowledge and experience are worth a pretty penny.

We’re going to rebuild our bathroom better than ever, with the help of a pro this time around. Follow along to learn the mistakes me made, and how we are fixing. My greatest hope is that our failure will help others avoid the same mistakes

What happens when a DIY goes wrong? Well, we learn

What happens when a DIY goes wrong? Well, we learned the hard way over the weekend. After completing a complete main bathroom remodel for a ridiculously low budget we were thrilled and in love with what we had created. However, a cracked tile, and water leaking over the curb caused us to have to call in a professional for an assessment.

We had followed the instructions from the waterproofing system in regards to the type of mortar we used, which unfortunately didn’t work for oversized large format tiles we installed. The result was a room full of tiles barely hanging onto anything on the walls and a major safety hazard.

We made the hard decision to do what we had to to get it right, which meant completely tearing up our dream bathroom, down to the studs, and starting over.

It’s frustrating to know that a few simple changes in the install could have made all the difference, and we would still be enjoying our $6k incredible bathroom remodel. However, experience and knowledge come at a cost, and in this case it is to the tune of a $5300 fix.

It sucks. Of course it does. But out of all the renovations we’ve made to our house, this is the only thing we’ve had to redo, and we’re proud of that. We’re also thankful for the relief in knowing that this time it will be done right. Meaning we can enjoy our bathroom without seeing all of the mistakes and worrying that something is wrong. It means peace of mind when we go to sell our house. And it means a solid lesson learned. I’m thankful for all of those things, and that is why I keep a smile on my face through it all!

How do you save money on bathroom renovations? Lot

How do you save money on bathroom renovations? Lots of our budget pain points were involved in this little space pictured here. It’s unbelievable how much vanities, mirrors, and light fixtures cost! We went with a pre-fab vanity from Home Depot, which we found on sale, and I updated it with modern pulls to achieve the look I wanted. I paired it with a thrifted mirror I got for $20.

I had my eye on this light fixture for a while and eventually got it on a slight sale. Time is always your friend when you are on a budget. Being able to watch for sales and grab the things you’re eyeing at a discount adds up.

What happens when you complete a remodel and then

What happens when you complete a remodel and then you have to redo it? Well, we’re finding out this week 😑. And it has to do with our dream bathroom pictured here. Some of the chances you take with DIYing your own home projects and remodels, is accepting the risk that you might make mistakes that have to be corrected. In this case, we chose to learn how to tile, while simultaneously learning how to create a curbed, sloped, linear drain shower. For all intents and purposes it turned out great and looks beautiful. However…

A few months ago one of our daughters dropped the squeegee and cracked one of the large format tiles in the shower floor. The hairline crack turned into a full blown crack with chips in it and it went from a should be, to a HAS to be replaced situation. At the same time I happened to spot some mold on our subfloor when I was in our crawl space and realized that the small bit of water we saw coming over the shower curb, was actually a lot of water coming over it, and because we had a gap between our door casing and the new floor, all of that water was basically draining straight down to the subfloor.

As a bandaid we filled all the gaps there will great stuff and caulked it to seal it. But now the water just runs into our closet. The mold has stopped, but we had to stop the water leaking out of the shower. We tried a number of different things, but none seemed to work. The water was running down the shower door and pooling on he curb and then spilling out over it. So when the tile guy came to assess the cracked floor tile we asked him about it.
