Hi! And welcome to our little corner of the internet! We’re really glad you’re here 🙂
This blog started as a collection of mementos during a time when my husband, Will, and I decided to put our house in Charlotte, NC on the market, and move back home to Asheville, NC to live in an old tobacco barn until we figured out what we really wanted to do with our lives. We were tired of life in the city, and ready to get back to the simple things that make life worth living. The Barn is meant to be a reflection of that mindset. An appreciation for everyday life, acknowledging the blessings we hope we never take for granted, and basking in the love we share in our family.
We lived in the barn for a little over six months before we dove headfirst into the military lifestyle as Will began his training to be an Air Force JAG (Judge Advocate General – military lawyer). When he graduated we, along with our two dogs, shipped off to the wild and wonderful midwest to a snow-covered little town called Rapid City, South Dakota where we spent two great years.
After South Dakota we were assigned to Turkey, where we welcomed our first daughter and spent nearly two years on what felt like perpetual vacation, but with some extreme highs and some very low lows. We left Turkey right as things were kind of heating up, decided to separate from the Air Force, got pregnant with our second daughter, and returned to our hometown of Asheville, North Carolina where we bought a little brick ranch house that ended up being our first flip. It hadn’t been touched since it was built in 1979, and a legit hoarder had rented it for the 15 years prior to our ownership. It was in bad shape, and we ended up replacing everything down to the light switches.
Will ultimately decided (with full support from me) that the firm life was not for him, so he took a job with a company in South Carolina. After commuting for two years we finally bit the bullet and moved back out of our hometown, to the Greenville, South Carolina area, and into our second flip home. A 90’s beauty with a lot of potential, in a wonderful neighborhood.
This blog has been the chronicle of our adventures, our burning passion for culinary delights and travel, life in the military, and a number of other things, but most recently it has been devoted almost entirely to renovations and DIYs.
My mission is to achieve a high end lifestyle on a realistic budget. You will find ways to get looks for less, build or create things on your own, and life and design hacks that are both practical and easy on your wallet.
